In 2018, Rivières de Lumières presented an exhibition by visual artist Sandra Tremblay at Café Général. The paintings featured in this exhibition were created between 2015 and 2018. Drawn from the bodies of work Iconographie sauvage et polyloque and Traversées imaginaires, they are part of Sandra Tremblay’s pictorial production.
Sandra is an artist who has participated in several editions of Rivières de Lumières as a spectator, extra and set designer. This participation has nourished her fascination for the nocturnal ambiences. The paintings do not illustrate the artistic content of the Rivières de Lumières editions, but rather are a pretext for evoking the sensual ambience of the lanterns.
An integral part of her creative process for some years now, her encounters with stage artisans fuel the composition of her paintings. She immerses herself in what goes on during the preparation and realization of shows, revealing references to other artistic disciplines such as dance and the circus arts.
In her creative process, the composition of a painting involves the same stages and twists and turns as a scene developed by playwrights. It’s a process in which elements are built up and superimposed in transparency, while retaining certain marks. The elements disappear and change throughout the process.
Here, the paintings are reunited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rivières de Lumières. Sandra’s paintings have remained important to the festival, a way of leaving a permanent trace of an envelope of ephemeral emotions linked to the magic of lanterns.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Rivières de Lumières, our co-artistic director Kristelle Holliday, who had programmed Sandra’s 2018 exhibition, lent herself to the game by diving into her creative universe.
She wove links between each of Sandra’s canvases and the emotions and attachments that emerge from her works, in connection with Rivières de Lumières.
